Goddess: Amaterasu by MiyuLin-Art Goddess: Amaterasu by MiyuLin-Art
About Amaterasu
Amaterasu (天照) or Amaterasu-ō-mi-kami (天照大神) is the most importent deity in the Japanese Shinto believe. She symbolizes the Sun, is ruler of the Takama-ga-hara and the ancestor of the Japanese Emperor Family.
She's the Sister of Tsukuyomi and Susanoo.

Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi
She shared Heaven together with her brothers, but during a incedent she separates from both.
During a festival Tsukuyomi (God of the Moon) was disguisted by the Godesses Uke Mochi (Goddess of Fruits), because she offered him Fruits and the fruits came overall from her body. Disguist by this he killed her and made his sister and wife Amaterasu upset. She labeled him as a evil god and split away from him, separating Night and Day from each other.

Amaterasu and Susanoo
|The oldest sources for Susanoo myths are the ca. 680 AD Kojiki and ca. 720 AD Nihon Shoki. They tell of a long-standing rivalry between Susanoo and his sister. When he was to leave Heaven by orders of Izanagi, he went to bid his sister goodbye. Amaterasu was suspicious, but when Susanoo proposed a challenge to prove his sincerity, she accepted. Each of them took an object of the other's and from it birthed gods and goddesses. Amaterasu birthed three women from Susanoo's sword while he birthed five men from her necklace. Claiming the gods were hers because they were born of her necklace, and the goddesses were his, he decided that he has won the challenge, as his item produced women. The two were content for a time, but Susanoo, the Storm God, became restless and went on a rampage destroying his sister's rice fields, hurled a flayed pony at her loom, and killed one of her attendants in a fit of rage. Amaterasu, who was in fury and grief, hid inside the Ama-no-Iwato ("heavenly rock cave"), thus effectively hiding the sun for a long period of time.|

Amaterasu in the Popular Culture
|Film

In the 2003 film Onmyoji II, the story of Amaterasu (played by Kyōko Fukada) is revisited when the main character, based on Abe no Seimei (played by Mansai Nomura), assumes the role of the dancer in bringing the goddess back to earth.

Anime and Manga

In Dream Saga, the earth is destroyed and recreated whenever humans have polluted it. This is done when Susanoo, the god of destruction, consumes Amaterasu, the sun. The two main characters, Yuuki and Takaomi, are given key roles in the process.

In the manga Urusei Yatsura, a parody of the famous 'cave story' is performed which ends when the gods decide they enjoy the burlesque spectacle outside the cave so much, they lock Amaterasu inside.

In Naruto the Uchiha Clan can achieve Amaterasu, a black, eternal flame, as well as Susano'o through advancing their sharingan.

Video Games

In Castlevania Aria of Sorrow, a shrine to Amaterasu (Tensho Doijin) is used to invoke an eclipse. In the game, eclipses can contain anger and evil intentions (and Dracula's castle), just as Amaterasu contained Susanoo's rampage by hiding her light in a cave.

In the video game Okami, Amaterasu is depicted as a white wolf and she is the main protagonist of the game. Like in the ancient legends she is the goddess of the sun, but controls many other powers as well by painting things. This depiction of Amaterasu is also a playable character in Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

In the PlayStation 2 video game Persona 4, Amaterasu is the ultimate persona of Yukiko Amagi.
